The worship of the Bereginiss still has its roots among the Proto-Slavs. It was believed that the omnipresent and powerful ancient Slavic Bereginjas lived in other Goddesses and earthly women.
The word "Bereginja" itself comes from "protect" (оберег) and "shore" (берег). Our ancestors believed that the river was the gateway to the other world at the border of the Middle World (here and now) and the Lower World (ancestors, subconscious). In this context, the bank symbolises reliable support, a fortress of the visible world and protection from dark entities.
Bereginjas are also seen as a collective image. These are good spirits whose main purpose is to help people. They give power to Zhiva, Lada and Lelja, as the female principle has many manifestations. It is certain that they were worshipped long before Rod.
In ancient times the Bereginjas were called "three times nine sisters" (тридевять сестриц), each of them has its own name and purpose, they represent the 27 origin energies of the universe. Bereginas give women special strength to protect and heal their home, family and tribe.
